Loan Forgiveness?

    you only get loan forgiveness if you die or become permanently disabled.

    Best you can hope for is to file for financial hardship deferrment or forebearence.

    If they had loan forgiveness, I would have gotten it by now.

    Although most people will tell you that you cannot bankrupt a student loan in certain situations and circumstances you can. It is not an easy thing to do and can be expensive depending on filing and attorney fees. If you feel like you might be able to file on your student loans I would suggest speaking to an attorney or even one of the criminal justice instructors at your university. I’m sure some of the instructors have a law degree and may practice on the sidelines.

    There is a new forgiveness program that was just enacted in October for Public Service. It offers forgiveness for public service employees after 10 years of payments and service. More about that is at

    You may also qualify for programs through your state or an employer.

    Of course, there are the deferments and forbearances, but those are only temporary and interest does accrue.

    The best way to ensure you meet this requirement is to make sure you get the right loan. Perkins loans are eligible for discharge for certain occupations and Stafford loans are for only one occupation – teacher. See pages 34 and 35.
